Reconstruction of the bridges of M7 Motorway, section Budapest-Zamárdi

The 30 years old Budapest – Balatonaliga section of the M7 Motorway was fully reconstructed in 1999-2002. The almost 100 bridges of the 80 km long section have been retro fitted as well. The project was completed under the continuous maintenance of traffic in three phases.

There are several different types of bridges on the motorway: frame bridges, multibeam decks, cast in situ hollow core slabs, box section beam bridges, etc…The most frequent damages were caused by the concrete corrosion, the soaking of the structures due to insufficient insulation. The bad condition of the curbs, the not code-conform railings and the overall bad repair of the structures and the surrounding including service stairs, dranaige system and the slope linings was problem as well. On the overpasses the insufficient cross fall was increased with an extra concrete layer.

Further part of the job was the design of 7 overpasses on the missing right carriageway of the 20 km long Balatonaliga-Zamárdi section. As these bridges adjoin to the existing left-carriageway bridges, the construction required special considerations for each case.
